The name comes from burner phones: a cheap prepaid handset you use for a while and then throw away, so nothing links back to your main number. A burner email works the same way. It's a real, working address that you hand out instead of your own, and you never plan to use it again.
People say burner, throwaway, disposable or temp mail more or less interchangeably. The idea behind all of them is the same: the site you're signing up for gets an address that works today and leads nowhere tomorrow.
A burner is the right choice when the account has no future. If there's a chance you'll need to log back in, reset a password or receive a refund, a forwarding alias is the better tool, and for anything involving money, health or official paperwork you should use your real address. We wrote a short guide on when not to use temp mail because getting this wrong can lock you out of an account for good.
| Can | Can't |
|---|---|
| Receive mail from any sender, usually within seconds | Send or reply to messages |
| Show the text of every message and pull out verification codes | Receive file attachments |
| Stay alive for 24 hours, or up to 7 days with one free extension | Live forever |
| Reopen on another device with its recovery link | Get past sites that block every disposable domain |
It hides your real address from the site you sign up for. It doesn't hide your IP address or anything else you type into that site's forms.
Yes, until it expires, by opening its recovery link. After that the address is gone and can't be reissued to you.
No. There's nothing to register and no password to remember.
